Isamu WAKABAYASHI

Wakabayashi started making sculptures from iron in 1960's. Then he made his works based on his speculations with nature-views using many kind of materials such as copper, stone, wood, lead and sulfur. His print-works are also remarkable. He created approximately 700 prints of mimeographs, woodcuts, copper plates, lithographs, screenpritns.
We exhibit 13 of his prints from a portfolio of etchings "AIRS" (1989) and from a portfolio of lithographs "UNDERWOOD" (1989).

1936 Born in Tokyo
1959 Graduated from the sculpture section of the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.
Had his first exhibition at the Mitsugi Gallery, Tokyo, of various wood and steel sculptures.
1960 - 1966 Exhibited in the Nikaten. 1962 Won the Gold Award at the 47th Nikaten.
1967 Received the Kamakura Museum of Modern Art Prize at The 2nd Exhibition of Contemporary Japanese Sculpture.
1973 - 1974 Llived in Paris.
1975 Became an associate professor at Musashino Art University.
1980,1986 Exhibited in The Venice Biennale.
1996 Received the prize of Teijiro Nakahara.
1999 Became a professor at Tama Art University
2002 Solo exhibition at Toyota Municipal Museum of Art..
