Born the 13 of October of 1914 in Nagasaki. During his childhood he lived in Taiwan, Kumamoto, Wakayama, Hokkaido, Himeji, Tokyo, etc. He entered the oil painting department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and studied under Takeji Fujishima. After graduating from the School of Fine Arts in 1939 (Showa 14), he went on to participate in the formation of the “Bijutsu Bunka Kyokai” which was directed by Ichiro Fukuzawa. In 1947 (Showa 22), he became a member of the Free Artists Association. In 1960 (Showa 35), he withdrew from the association. That same year, he formed the art group “Doyo Jidai” and was an active member until disbanding in 1975. From that point onwards, as an independent artist, he released unique works based on social concerns. |
From 1939 (Showa 14), he served as a lecturer in the architecture department of Shibaura College of Technology (currently Shibaura Institute of Technology), and later taught as an assistant professor. In 1951 (Showa 26), he founded the Japan Glass Painting Association and served as its representative. He was the author of “Dictionary of Art Terminology'' (Zokeisha) and “The Heretic Painter” (co-author, Zoukeisha). He passed away in Tokyo on June 24, 1993 (Heisei 5). |
