Yanagisawa started his career as a photographer with his portfolio "Untitled
Youth" which was published in a photograph magazine "Rokkor"
in 1958. But soon it was found that he had contracted tuberculosis. So
he had to receive medical treatment for two years. In the meantime, his
object of interest moved from an advertisement and fashion to "changing
cities and changing Japan". After recovered he photographed many cities
in Japan.
"I like to take pictures of a kind of grimes attached to houses and people."
he said.
His view of subject which is very kind but
not so sentimental made his works distinctive.
This is his 6th solo exhibition for 50 years of his life as a photographer.
We will exhibit 30 pictures which were taken in Italy in 1993.
For the first time, he had photographed cities, people and atmosphere in a
foreign country. It was expected this series would boost his career. But
he was not able to release the shutter, because of the operations for
cancer of larynx and esophagus. So this series has still kept being the latest
one.
